Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.com Product Description The Porter-Cable PN650 Palm Nailer Kit is a versatile pneumatic nail gun with a comfortable design and magnetic tip. This nailer will accept 1-1/4 to 6-1/2 inch nails (3d to 70d), and it comes with four different nose tips, including finishing tip, magnetic tip, wide nail tip, and steel hammer tip. Don't worry about driving the nail too deep, the PN650 features depth-of-drive control to make sure the nail gets set correctly. The nailer operates at 50-120 PSI and features a multi-blow firing mode--2,300 BPM at 100 PSI.

Average Rating = 4.5 Total Reviews = 39 [3 Stars]: Good nailer when new I used the PN650 nailer to drive most of the framing nails for a boathouse (30 x 28 x 13 feet high) right on the coast of Maine in 2009. For 3 months it was fine, but it started getting difficult to start the nails. By the 4th month of daily use it was almost impossible to start the first nail - I resorted to hitting the back of the palm nailer with a hammer. If I waited more than a few minutes, the next nail was just as hard. So basically it was unusable. After tearing it down and cleaning it this winter, without replacing any of the (many) seals, it was better, but barely.
But, it did its job under hard use in plenty of rain in an extremely corrosive working environment, so maybe that's all one can ask.
If I can find a rebuild kit I'll report back on whether that helped or not.
Now I have rebuilt the unit with a $30 kit that provides all of the rubberish internal parts (o-rings, seals, gaskets, etc.). Not sold by Amazon as far as I could tell. The unit definitely works better, but I don't think it is as good as new. I won't be sure until I start using it seriously again this year. All air nailers have exhaust ports. On this one there is nothing to prevent moisture from entering the unit through these ports. In corrosive coastal environments, this is probably deadly. The machined parts in my unit had some evident corrosion - more than just wear I believe. No fault of the product. I expect any of the competitive products would have fared the same. More care for my tools this year!
[5 Stars]: You're not going to believe this! Don't be fooled by the posting date of this review. In Feb 2008, I purchased a Porter-Cable PN650 palm nailer and because of a substandard magnet design that failed to hold a nail firmly (shaking it slightly would dislodge the nail and it would fall out of the nosepiece), I gave it a low rating in my Amazon.com review, recommended that potential buyers purchase something else, and lamented the situation because the rest of the "kit" was first rate. To my surprise, I was contacted by Porter-Cable and asked about my experience. We finished up the conversation with my offer to re-test if Porter Cable decided to make any design changes - I was pretty skeptical anything would come of the inquiry and I forgot about it. Again, to my pleasant surprise, I was recently contacted and informed that a modified product was available, if I was still interested in testing the unit - You can bet I was interested. How many times do you complain about an issue and someone not only listens, but actively responds. So it arrived, I unpacked it and gave the acid test - Driving 8 and 12 penny common nails, 8 penny galvanized nails. What I found was much better performance - You can still shake a nail loose, but you have to work much, much harder to make it happen - From my informal testing, shaking the nail loose came only after excessive movement which is not the experience you would have in actual use. So, as a result of this positive experience with "Porter-Cable customer satisfaction 101", I'm pleased to put this tool back in the "highly recommended" category. Now if I could just get Milwaukee to listen to me on...
[4 Stars]: Fairly short but important learning curve When purchased, the main bushing was too tight to remove. Porter-Cable told me where to take it for fix. The repair facility fixed it while I waited. It is my first palm nailer, and I learned how to use it pretty well by driving a couple dozen 12d nails. It is important to adjust compressor to have enough pressure to drive nail completely without so much pressure that the palm nailer is unnecessarily over-powered. I'm happy with it, and would buy it again if I had to make the decision all over again.
